Neuropathology

Our division offers diagnostic services and conducts research of neurological diseases in animals and has a long-standing expertise in this area. In the 1930th the University of Berne established the Institute of Comparative Neurology under the lead of Prof. Walter Hofmann (Veterinary Medicine) and Prof. Ernst Frauchiger (Human Medicine). This work was later continued by Prof. Ernst Fankhauser and Prof. Marc Vandevelde in the Institute of Animal Neurology at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Berne.  Due to reorganization in 2000, the Institute was integrated into the newly established Division of Experimental Clinical Research.
Currently, the histological slide archives comprises more than 40.000 neuropathological cases collected over time. Besides the classical histopathological diagnostic, numerous immunochemical and immunohistochemical techniques for the identification of neurological diseases are being applied in our laboratories. Research activities focus on neurological infectious diseases with a special emphasis on the pathogenesis of listeric enzephalitis in ruminants.
